Jeremy's Point of View

The challenge means a lot to me on two levels, both physical and personal.

Ever since being diagnosed four years ago, I have been battling constantly with this 'thing' in my head. MS can be controlling, often limiting what you do, reducing an otherwise happy and active life to... well... nothing.

Personally I don't like it. I don't let it control me, I don't let it run my life (well, within reason). For me, doing the 140-mile cycle ride is a 'physical' issue, proving to myself that I CAN do it, proving to my MS that it can be done, and showing it just who is BOSS!

Then there is the personal side. Personal as in me, how I was touched by the MSRC very early on, and how their support and advice has proved invaluable. There will always be times when you can walk, or you cant see properly, or you can't pee or even just feel a bit wobbly. For all those times, there's the MSRC!

The MSRC has been wonderful, and the service outstanding. Easy-to-understand (and up-to-date) information that isn't full of Scientific babble. And their magazine, New Pathways. Without it, I wouldn't have learned what I knew today.

This is the reason why we are so keen on raising money for them – because the MSRC is there for you, your friends, your family, whoever, 24/7 – no questions, non-judgmental, just friendly and helpful advice. If anyone deserves this, they do.

The challenge in hand is to make it to the Lake District by train and then, in three days, cycle a 140 mile route from Whitehaven (by the Irish Sea), to Sunderland (North Sea). We chose this route because it is just that: a CHALLENGE. In my opinion, if one MS sufferer can do it, then he will most certainly pave the way...

I always tell people: 'MS is a frame of mind'. Yes, it is physical, but all too often we just give up, give in, write ourselves off. To me, this isn't acceptable. This challenge isn't JUST about raising money and MS 'awareness', but also about sending a message out to all those 'able' sufferers out there, that this is OUR life, we don't give up, and to prove that it IS possible to live life to the full.

To me, succeeding is everything. I'm not giving up on myself. I hope you don't either.
